The Okement in Autumn…
Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns
George Eliot
In recent years, i have become a little obsessed with the East Okement River in Devon. You can join the river just south of Okehampton on the northern edge of Dartmoor and follow it all the up to its source on the high moor.
It is a wild and yet peaceful valley – once you get away from the viaduct of the A30 that passes over head just a few yard from the car park…but despite the relics and ruins of human industry being littered all along it, yet it seems frozen in time and i have never been anywhere that felt more like it belonged in Lord of the Rings….!?
I timed this visit deliberately in late October to try and get the peak of the autumn colour and this shot come out nicely. Just near this spot, I found a old log in the middle of the channel, hooked up temporarily before making its way further on downstream in the next flood. I loved the way it’s mushroom collection still clung on despite their unexpected journey…!!
